Rotary Walk With Us

My Activity Tracking

31
kms

My target 50 kms

I'm challenging myself to walk 50km throughout the month of October to raise vital funds to create. a polio free world.

Polio is the world’s forgotten disease and something that should have been made history a long time ago. Polio is a crippling and potentially fatal infectious disease. There is no cure, but there are safe and effective vaccines. The strategy to eradicate polio is therefore based on preventing infection by immunizing every child until transmission stops and the world is polio-free.

That is why this October we are asking you to Walk With Us for those that can’t.

We are challenging you to walk, run or roll 10, 20, or 50km throughout the month and raise vital funds that will help eradicate and prepare us for a Polio free world. A polio-free world does not mean it’s over either. It requires updated vaccination policies, including the phased withdrawal of oral polio vaccines (OPV), appropriate containment of the poliovirus in facilities, the certification that polio has been eradicated, and planning for the transition of knowledge and infrastructure to serve other health goals.

In recent months we have all had to find new ways to stay fit and healthy. Rotary’s Walk With Us End Polio Walk is a fitness challenge that you can complete from October 1st to 31st to reach your target in a COVIDsafe way.

Be part of something special: Walk With Us this October for those that can’t. Be part of the end game strategy and raise funds to help make Polio history so that no child ever again suffers paralytic poliomyelitis.

My Updates

Why stop polio?

Friday 3rd Oct

Ending Polio has been Rotary's number one humanitarian priority since 1985. Working with our partners in the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI), we have protected 3 billion children in 122 countries from this paralyzing disease and seen a reduction in cases of 99.9%. Rotary's advocacy efforts have played a role in decisions by governments to expend more than US$10 billion towards the battle.

The Wild Polio virus remains endemic only in Afghanistan and Pakistan. However, "variant" or vaccine derived polio is present in countries with poor health systems and low vaccination rates.  Vaccine hesitancy and conflict continue to plague attempts to erase that final 0.1% of cases, but GPEI remains committed to reaching its goal of total elimination.

We have nearly reached our goal of a polio free world, but it is crucial that we continue working to eradicate polio from every country.  If the campaign stopped today, within 10 years polio could paralyze upwards of 200,000 children each year.

So please join me in being part of the End Polio Now solution - Walk With Us and help raise funds for this worthy cause. Every $1 raised here becomes $3 thanks to the generosity of the Gates Foundation.
